Our project involved creating different colors of paints by using chemistry. We created pigments such as red ochre, Prussian blue, yellow, and green. To make these paints, we combined chemicals to create pigments formed from the precipitates created in the reaction. To create red ochre, i combined Zinc oxide and iron nitrate creating a single displacement reaction to create the iron oxide that gives it its red. To make Prussian blue, we combined iron chloride and potassium ferrocyanide to produce iron ferrocyanide, or Prussian blue. Also, we made yellow by combining lead nitrate and potassium iodide. After filtering out the precipitate, I combined the powder with a paint primer to create the paint. Our group used the paints we created to paint a piece of canvas, where we had drawn the San Marin logo from a stencil I created.
Reflection: This project was fun. I was able to be creative and create a piece of artwork using a paint that I made myself. This project went pretty well. The only thing I would do better would be to grind the precipitates more to make a smoother paint with less chunks. I learned about chemistry and pigments and was able to do art.
