Move It - Hybrid Car

For our project we had to design a car using a new source of energy that is more environment friendly. Our group first decided to use a water bottle car that uses rubber bands to propel a fan which moves the car, but realizing the car had to carry a mass of 250 grams so we had to rethink our design with 2 less build days. and a whole new method of propelling the car. We decide to make our car out of wood with cardboard wheels. We tied a string around the rear axle and wound it back and attached rubber bands to the string which we attached to a long arm that protruded out of the front of the car.
Spring Constant (k):stiffness of a spring or tendency of a spring to go back to its original form
Spring concept=Force/distance (N/m) The springs are the source of energy within our car and cause the wheels to turn
Potential Energy of the Spring (PEspring): energy stored by expanding stretching or compressing an elastic object
PEspring=1/2(spring constant)(distance spring is compressed or expanded)^2 (J) The potential energy of the spring is how much energy is stored within our rubber band when taut
Velocity (v): rate of covered distance in a direction
Velocity=change in distance/change in time (meters/second) Speed of our car
Acceleration (a): rate of change of velocity
Acceleration= change in velocity/change in time (meters/second squared) acceleration of our car and how the velocity fluctuates during its drive
Kinetic Energy (KE): energy due to motion
KE=1/2mv^2 measured in Joules(J) the amount of energy in the movement of our car
Total Energy (Total E): all the energy in your system you are observing
Total E= potential + kinetic + thermal energy. The total energy involved with our car
Distance vs. Time(d v. t): how far something moves related to time
The less time and the further the distance the greater velocity and speed. The distance traveled by our car vs time after release
Thermal Energy(TE): energy converted to heat
TE=Total E-KE-PE. Thermal energy was all the energy not converted to kinetic or potenial.
Reflection
Our group struggled to create a car that could carry the 2 stacks of pennies 5 meters reaching a furthest run of 4 meters. My group worked pretty well during this project and the only thing I think we could of done better was think of a better idea for the original vehicle because we lost precious time working on an inadequate prototype. I feel like grew as a person and learned to help and forgive more. After my hand was stapled with a staple gun, I was quick to forgive. I became fully involved in my groups work and stayed on task throughout the process and I feel like I learned to focus better and work better with people. I became more thoughtful and understanding of my peers. I let my group mates share their ideas and help build the final product. I feel like i expanded much communicating with my groupmates and peers in my class and learned to plan and choose a good design in my future projects.
